Being The Light In Life was taught by Rev. Dunamis Okunowo on the 24th of October 2021 at Shouts of Grace Center, Joke Plaza, Beside Trans Amusement Park, Bodija-UI Road, Ibadan.
In his teaching, Rev. Dunamis made mention of the following important points:
The first words God spoke was ‘Light.’
God spoke: “Light!” And light appeared.
Genesis 1:3 (MSG)
The first thing to seek in every situation is light. You cannot afford to be without light!
When you walk in the dark, you will surely stumble.
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
John 11:10 (KJV)
The Light that Scripture is talking about is light on the inside, not an external light. You need light inside you, not torch light!
Prayer:
May the eyes of your understanding be enlightened.
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
Ephesians 1:18 (KJV)
The more the darkness, the more the opportunity for you to shine.
For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
Isaiah 60:2-3 (KJV)
You are light! You are not darkness!
As the head of the house, you are meant to have more light. As a husband, God expects you to provide vision for your family!
Every problem you encounter (every issue you have) is as a result of a lack of light. And until you see light, everything remains the same. Things fail due to a lack of light.
God’s word is not dependent on what is going on in the society; God’s word is self-existent!
Never allow yourself to get accustomed to darkness! Switch on your light!
When there’s light on your inside, your speech will change.
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, [it is] because [there is] no light in them.
Isaiah 8:20 (KJV)
Your words are dependent on the amount of light you have on the inside. Words are spirits.
Some Points To Note
Jesus is the light.
Jesus once again addressed them: “I am the world’s Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in.”
John 8:12 (MSG)
You have no excuse not to walk in light; Jesus says, “I provide plenty of light.” You must therefore work at the manifestation of you being the light in life.
He that has the light is the one in control.
It is your light that will announce you.
The Gentiles shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising.
Isaiah 60:3 (NKJV)
2. Men usually prefer darkness until they meet Jesus.
And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:19 (NKJV)
3. Make up your mind to go for light, because that’s where your victory is.
No matter how intense the darkness is, it will get shattered once light comes
No matter how far into darkness you’ve gone, all you need is an encounter with light.
Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven.
Acts 9:1-3 (NKJV)
All you need is light – in your business, marriage, career, etc. You must seek the manifestation of you being the light in life.

This devotional is continued from yesterday, where we talked about how to dispel every iota of darkness in relationship and life generally.
In verse 2, it says But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
You see, we must come out plain and lay our cards on the table before God. There are some actions that can invalidate the benefits of His mercies in terms of favours and opportunities. I must renounce all forms of iniquity. I have to quit double dating. I have to stop seeing that married person. I have to stop frolicking with that colleague of mine! You have to make up your mind not to walk in any form of craftiness and stop quoting God’s word to suit yourself in a deceitful way! Your conscience must be clear with God. This is how to live the life of God. Devoid of any deception!
That is why the scriptures says in Galatians “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked…” You can’t play God around. You can’t continue in some habitual sins and then think you will still have God’s support and favour. It doesn’t work like that!
Check out Amplified version of verse 2
We have renounced disgraceful ways (secret thoughts, feelings, desires and underhandedness, the methods and arts that men hide through shame); we refuse to deal craftily (to practice trickery and cunning) or to adulterate or handle dishonestly the Word of God, but we state the truth openly (clearly and candidly). And so we commend ourselves in the sight and presence of God to every man’s conscience
And then in Message translation:
We refuse to wear masks and play games. We don’t maneuver and manipulate behind the scenes. And we don’t twist God’s Word to suit ourselves. Rather, we keep everything we do and say out in the open, the whole truth on display, so that those who want to can see and judge for themselves in the presence of God.
Verse 6 says For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
You see, there is a light in your heart. That light shines there. When you are going through issues, and there seems to be darkness all around, realize that the darkness is only without, and not within, and so you can reach out to the light within, and come forth with God’s word in your mouth to dispel the darkness without. And you know what, the light shines in darkness and darkness cannot withstand it. So be aware of that! There is light within you. In the midst of that depressive wave and despondent waters, reach out within to the light of God’s word and out of thy belly shall flow rivers of living waters!
The next time darkness tries to envelope your mind because of negative thoughts that tells you might never get married or God has abandoned you, reach out to that light within that says “the thoughts of God towards you are thoughts of peace and not of evil…” The next time darkness descends on your soul because of negative thoughts that tells you your life is an error because of past mistakes and that you are suffering because of past misdeeds, reach out to the light within that tells you, “Behold, I will do a new thing.”
Reach out to the light of God’s word that tells you, “God will restore all you have lost.” Reach out to the light of God’s word that tells you that “you will forget the shame of your youth!”
I pray for you this morning that God will open your eyes to see that they that be with you are more than they that oppose you. I pray you realize that greater is He within you than he that is in the world!
CONFESSION FOR THE DAY I see correctly. I know how to dispel every darkness in me.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY Lord, teach me how to use your word to dispel darkness in my life.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY “And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless…” (Genesis 15:2a KJV)
Christ has called you to be a light in a troubled and dark world.
“You are the light that gives light to the world. A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden. And people don’t hide a light under a bowl. They put the light on a lampstand. Then the light shines for all the people in the house. In the same way, you should be light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do. Live so that they praise your Father in heaven.” Matt. 5:14-16 ICB.
The verses above vividly tell you one of the ways Christ has called us to be – be a light to the world. Just like it’s written in the passages above, why would anyone light a lamp and put it under their bed? Why would you not want to let others know about the wonderful love God has for everyone through Christ?
Light is supposed to make what is in the dark known to those in the dark. People who are yet to know Jesus are in the dark. They are lost, hopeless, and lonely. You are supposed to offer them hope and love through your light (telling them about Jesus).
Jesus has called you to be a light and not to hide your light. Put your light on a lampstand to shine to others so they may see and follow the way to Jesus.
Doing good is another way of showing your light to others. Your actions and words must show how good you are which is also a reflection of the Spirit of God in you. So, when you do good, you are saying to the world “I have God’s spirit in me.”
May the Lord help you today to make your light shine to the world. Amen.
Prayer: Jesus, I want my light to shine to the whole world. Show me practical ways I can do this. In Your mighty name, I pray, amen.
Action point: What light are you showing today? Good or bright light? Read John 1:4.
