What Jesus Said About Lust: 5 Things To Learn

What Jesus Said About Lust: 5 Things To Learn

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Matthew 5:28 (KJV) says, “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”  Matthew 5:28, part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, challenges us to examine the condition of our hearts and minds. It goes beyond outward actions and addresses the inner motivations that shape our behavior.

Here are five key lessons  we can draw from Matthew 5:28:

1. Sin Begins in the Heart

Jesus emphasizes that sin isn’t just about physical actions—it starts in the heart. Lustful thoughts are as sinful as committing adultery because they reflect the same internal rebellion against God’s design for purity. Proverbs 4:23  reminds us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”  Our thoughts and intentions matter deeply to God.

Be vigilant about what you allow into your mind through media, entertainment, or unchecked thoughts. Guarding your heart is essential for spiritual and relational health.

2. God’s Standard Is Holiness, Not Just Outward Compliance

The Pharisees focused on external obedience to the law, but Jesus calls us to a higher standard—holiness of heart and mind. Adultery isn’t just a physical act; it begins with impure desires. 1 Samuel 16:7  declares, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”  God cares about the purity of our inner lives.

Pursue holiness not just in actions but in attitudes. Regularly ask God to search your heart and reveal areas that need cleansing (Psalm 139:23-24 ).

3. Accountability for Thoughts and Intentions

This verse makes it clear that we are accountable not only for what we do but also for what we think. Allowing lustful thoughts to take root is equivalent to crossing a boundary God has set. 2 Corinthians 10:5  instructs us to “take every thought captive to obey Christ.”  Our thoughts have power, and unchecked ones can lead to destructive behaviors.

When inappropriate thoughts arise, immediately redirect your focus to things that are pure, noble, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8 ).

4. The Importance of Self-Control

Lust thrives when self-control is absent. Jesus calls us to exercise discipline over our eyes and minds. Job 31:1  provides an example of intentional self-control: “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.”  Choosing where to direct our gaze reflects our commitment to honor God and others.

Set boundaries around what you watch, read, and consume. Cultivate habits that strengthen self-control, such as prayer, fasting, and accountability with trusted friends.

5. A Call to Radical Measures Against Temptation

In the verses following Matthew 5:28, Jesus urges drastic action if something causes us to stumble: “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out… If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off”  (Matthew 5:29-30). While this is hyperbolic language, the point is clear: take radical steps to avoid temptation. Sin has serious consequences, and avoiding it requires decisive action.

Identify triggers or environments that lead to lustful thoughts and remove them from your life. This might mean limiting screen time, installing accountability software, or seeking godly counsel to address deeper struggles.

When God Looks At You, What Will He See?

When God Looks At You, What Will He See?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The state of the heart is very important because that’s what God will see. When God looks down from heaven, he looks straight into your heart.

Unlike man, God doesn’t see the pulchritude or outward appearance, he looks inward.

Only God can see how desperately wicked a man’s heart is.

Only God knows the lady winking at you this moment but is plotting your downfall.

Only God sees beyond the nose.

Only God that sees the heart that loves you now and will love you some twenty-three years from now.

1 Sam 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

When God looks into your heart, what does he see? Will he see pride, arrogance, bitterness, rebellion, and all sorts?

Will he see perversion, scheming, devilish plots and what have you?

If God gives you the go-ahead to do what you have in mind, what will it be?

2 Sam 7:1-3 KJV And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies; 2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. 3 And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee.

See another person;

John 13:27, 30 (TPT) And when Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus looked at Judas and said, “What you are planning to do, go do it now. 30 So Judas left quickly and went out into the dark night to betray Jesus.

If God gives you the go-ahead to start that relationship, will it be a disaster? Think about it.

God did not have respect for Cain’s offering because he saw his heart. God knew he had the capacity to give more, but he decided to withhold it….and God said it would have been better for you not to have given at all.

So God is saying if all you want to be doing is taking selfies at cinema halls, I think you should still remain single… hehe…

If all you want to be doing has no kingdom relevance, God will just be shaking his head from heaven.

Ps 24:3-4 KJV Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

Can you see how God lays premium on the heart?

Watch what enters your heart this season. Be deliberate and intentional. Guard your heart with all diligence. Don’t train your heart to accommodate heartache…it can make the heart sick. Your heart is sacred. Don’t make it a dumping ground.

SINGLES – What Singles Can Learn From Joseph

3. Joseph refused to sin!

This is a major one! He was offered free intercourse, but he ran away! He refused to get bitter about God because of his experiences and did not allow depression and conflicting emotions to push him into the clutches of available compromise with Potiphar’s wife!

(7) As time went on, his master’s wife became infatuated with Joseph and one day said, “Sleep with me.”(8) He wouldn’t do it. He said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master doesn’t give a second thought to anything that goes on here–he’s put me in charge of everything he owns.(9) He treats me as an equal. The only thing he hasn’t turned over to me is you. You’re his wife, after all! How could I violate his trust and sin against God?”(10) She pestered him day after day after day, but he stood his ground. He refused to go to bed with her.(11) On one of these days he came to the house to do his work and none of the household servants happened to be there.(12) She grabbed him by his cloak, saying, “Sleep with me!” He left his coat in her hand and ran out of the house. – Gen 39:7-12 MSG

Joseph said; I cannot sin against God! He had the fear of God. This is one of the reasons he became the greatest in Egypt! From prison to a ruler! What Singles Can Learn From Joseph

You see, righteousness exalts! Never ever allow the devil to tell you that you are missing out because you are a child of God. Never envy those who don’t have a relationship with God. David made that mistake too and he envied unbelievers, but he said when he got into God’s presence, then he understood their ends.

Joseph ran away! This is what you do in the face of sexual compromise! That is not the time to start speaking in tongues when he or she has removed his or her clothes! Run away! Flee! That is why God created legs for you!

Don’t come around and say somebody seduced you. Run! Five minutes before the compromise, you will always know what is about to happen. Don’t wait there trying to see what will happen when all the angels have already fled so that their eyes will not behold evil!

What else will happen between a guy and a lady alone in the room, with no light and no candles around 9.00 pm? Run! That is how to preserve your destiny! Run! That is how to fulfill your destiny! Run! Pack out of the house, you are not yet married! Run away because your destiny is greater than the compromise you are entangled with! Free yourself by God’s Spirit and run!

Take a cue from Joseph. But if I leave him, he won’t give me money again! If I leave him, he won’t pay my school fees again, and so on and so forth. That was also the place Joseph found himself. He ran away, and then seemed to land in the prison! But God did not leave him and that is the important thing. Righteousness will eventually exalt you and give you a better platform than exchanging your body for some paltry sums!

I am a dreamer. I will not stop dreaming!

God Forgave You of Every Sin – Part 3

God Forgave You of Every Sin – Part 3

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Now that you have been forgiven your sin, there is one thing you should also strive for. As I earlier said, forgiveness is God’s act of Mercy, and this occurred during the death of Jesus on the cross of Calvary.

who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. – 1 Peter 2:10 [NKJV]

Since we have been shown mercy by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, it is expected that we show others mercy as well.

Why is this important?

Let’s look at the words of Jesus Christ himself while he was on earth.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. – Matt 5:7 [NKJV]

You have not been forgiven so that you can brag about it. You have been forgiven so that you can forgive others as well. You have received mercy so that you can show others mercy as well.

Regardless of what that person has done, god expects that we walk in love and forgive him/her.

Look at how the message bible puts it as I conclude this morning;

“You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘carefull,’ you find yourselves cared for. – Matt 5:7 [MSG]

Conclusively, the more forgiveness you show, the more forgiveness you receive.

May God help us to act as we have learnt in Jesus name, Amen.

PRAYER:
Father in Jesus name, I just want to thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me a new life.

ACTION PLAN:
Decide to live a life free of sin

DECLARATION:
I am a child of God, he has forgiven me my sins when Jesus died on the cross and so I live a life free of sin. Amen

God Forgave You Of Every Sin

God Forgave You Of Every Sin

Reading Time: 2 minutes

One of the greatest gifts God gave us as his children is the gift of forgiveness of sins. God forgave you of every sin. It’s a gift because it’s not what we deserve, forgiveness is God’s act of Mercy, and this occurred by the death of Jesus on the cross of Calvary.

You know that popular Sunday school verse:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16 (NIV)

God forgave us our sins so the devil has no say over our lives. Jesus blood paid for our sins and gave us redemption.

Do you know what it means to be redeemed? It means to have a new owner, Jesus moved us from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.

The wages of sin is death, but we as God’s children no longer have that penalty.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. –Romans 6:23(NIV)

We now have eternal life in Jesus Christ.

This is why you as God’s child, shouldn’t allow the devil put fear in you or lure you to do things God has already forgiven you for, things like telling lies, stealing, disobedience, etc.

Jesus saved us from a life of sin and so it is no longer our reality!

Today I want you to make up your mind to live a life that makes God happy always. God forgave you your sins so live a life free of them, so let the devil know you no longer belong to his camp!

PRAYER:
Father in Jesus name, I just want to thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me a new life. Amen.

ACTION PLAN:
Decide to live a life free of sin

DECLARATION:
I am a child of God, he has forgiven me my sins when Jesus died on the cross and so I live a life free of sin. Amen
