Do they save? Are they drowning in debt but pretending otherwise? Do they tithe, give, plan, or just spend whatever comes in?
You’re not asking for bank statements on the first date—just be observant.
Money isn’t the foundation of love, but it can break what love is trying to build if you ignore it too long.
For married couples, here’s the truth:
You’re not just sharing a bed—you’re sharing a budget. And if you’re not on the same page financially, you’ll end up blaming each other for stress that could have been avoided.
Here are a few simple things that may help:
1. Talk about money regularly, not only when there’s a crisis.
Set a time each month to go over income, expenses, plans—with grace, not tension.
2. Don’t hide money.
Secret accounts, silent spending, or “it’s my money” attitudes only create distrust. Even if you earn more, you’re building together.
3. Create a plan that reflects both of you.
One person may love saving, the other may enjoy giving or investing. Find a rhythm that honours both your personalities, not just one.
4. Pray about your finances.
Seriously. Invite God into your money decisions. He’s not just the God of miracles—He’s the God of wisdom.
When money becomes a conversation instead of a battle, your relationship will breathe easier. Because love thrives where trust lives, and how you handle money says a lot about trust.
We know money is a major part of our lives as married couples. In fact, we make about 70% of our decision based on finances.
The house we live in, the area we stay in, how many kids we have, what school they go to, what type of clothes they wear, the type of food they eat, how comfortable the house we live in is, do we rent an apartment or buy one, what work we do, where we work, what part of the country we live in, what type of friends we have, the type of car(s) we have, what church we attend, our spiritual level…and it goes on and on.
Money is so important that it appears 123 times in the Bible.

The only thing that can compete with God in our hearts is mammon or money. Every sin of covetousness, especially of material things is traceable to money issues.
Most Adulteries and fornications are basically traceable to money. For example, a beautiful lady or handsome who you get attracted to is attractive because she/he can afford expensive things that make her beautiful.
No one is attracted to an ugly and poor fellow.
Money is a defence! It can defend our spouse and marriage from falling if properly used
For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. – Ecc 7:12
So as couples, it is important we talk about finances and guard against its adverse effect on our marriage because we can make money serve us at whatever level we are in. Money will answer and solve the majority of our marital problems.
A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things. – Ecc 10:19

4. Blame Shift
You are constantly blamed for their woes, problems, difficulties, lack, failure and unhappiness.
You are told that you are the reason for any misfortune in their lives.
You are constantly reminded that everything with them was okay until you came into their lives.
5. Withdrawal
They are adept in withdrawing into their shells in order to punish you and demand your attention. They disengage and use neglect, abandonment, and measured withdrawals to punish, frighten and intimidate you.
6. You are always in the wrong
They make you feel that they are always right, and you are wrong. They would arrange facts and sentiments to prove that to you over and over again until you start thinking there is a curse on you, or that some people are fighting you spiritually from your village.
7. Control over you finances
They try to control your finances and how you spend money. Your credit card is permanently with them.
They tell you what to buy and what not to buy. You are told that you are a careless spender and and you cannot mange money well.
They end up emptying your account from month to month and keep threatening you that they will leave you and you will not be able to survive.
You know what?
God has made you free from such manipulative relationships!
Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
Psa 124:7 (KJV)
The snare of the soul has been broken by the Lord Jesus Christ. Do not subject yourself under any weak and beggarly element again! You have been made free!
I pray for all who might be in an emotionally draining and abusive alliance. I break the power of such deceptions and manipulations in Jesus name and I proclaim you free in Jesus name!
Whosoever the son of man has made free is free indeed! You are free from today in Jesus name!
