Spread the love
Reading Time: 2 minutes

You miss them most in the quiet moments. A song plays. You pass a familiar place. Suddenly, you remember the laughter and feel tempted to forget everything that hurt.

Longing can be very selective. It can show you the beautiful beginning while leaving out the nights you cried alone.

“The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.” — Proverbs 14:15 (KJV)

Wisdom looks carefully at the road ahead. It makes room for feeling without handing feeling the final decision.

When you miss them, remember the whole story

If you are single after a breakup, missing someone does not prove that returning is wise. Ask what ended the relationship. Has anything actually changed? Do you miss their character, or the relief of having someone call you theirs? Take time to grieve before treating loneliness as guidance from God.

If you are married and missing an old relationship, do not feed that longing with private messages or secret meetings. Nostalgia can make an unfinished story look easier than your present responsibilities. Guard your covenant. Bring the unmet need into honest conversation with your spouse rather than offering it to someone outside the marriage.

You may also be married and miss the closeness you once shared with your own spouse. Say that gently. “I miss laughing with you” can open a door that “You have completely changed” shuts. Invite a small reconnection rather than demanding the past return overnight.

For everyone, ask a deeper question: who was I becoming in that relationship? More truthful and responsible? Or more fearful, secretive, and willing to abandon conviction?

This is not an invitation to deny the good. You can thank God for beautiful moments while facing painful patterns. Honest grief can hold both.

Today, write down what you miss and what needs to change. Then speak with a wise person who can help you see the whole picture.

God meets you in longing. You can bring Him the ache without rushing to make a promise from it.

Prayer: Father, comfort me and clear my vision. Help me honour my commitments and choose with wisdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reflection: What part of the story have I been leaving out?
