You want to be loved, but you used to speak more freely. Now, before you say anything, you rehearse how they might react.
You delete the message. Swallow the question. Pretend the joke did not hurt. You apologise just to end the silence, even when you cannot explain what you did wrong.
Somewhere along the way, keeping the relationship became more important than telling the truth about what it was doing to you.
God sees you.
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3 (KJV)
Perhaps you learnt early that love could be withdrawn whenever you disappointed someone. Now, disagreement feels like the beginning of abandonment. You keep giving more, hoping you will eventually feel secure.
That fear deserves care. It should not be allowed to make every relationship decision for you.
You can be loved and speak truthfully
Your needs do not make you difficult. Your boundaries do not make you rebellious. And another person’s displeasure does not automatically mean you have sinned.
Yet healing also requires honesty about your own behaviour. Have you been testing their love, demanding constant reassurance, or using silence to punish them? Your wounds help explain your reactions; they do not excuse hurting someone else.
Biblical love calls both people into truth.
“Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth.” — 1 Corinthians 13:6 (KJV)
If you are single or dating, do not use marriage to gamble on a pattern you are already afraid to confront. Repeated dishonesty, sexual pressure, humiliation, or controlling behaviour needs to be addressed before vows.
If you are married, honouring your covenant includes addressing what is damaging it. Speak honestly. Seek wise pastoral support and qualified counselling where needed. Where there is violence or intimidation, prioritise safety and seek help. Forgiveness does not require giving someone unrestricted access to keep harming you.
Today, identify one truth you have been swallowing. Write it down. Consider how to express it clearly and safely, with support if necessary.
You can grow in patience without surrendering your voice. You can acknowledge your faults without accepting responsibility for everything.
Prayer: Father, heal the fear that makes me hide. Show me where I need to repent and where I need boundaries. Give me courage to love truthfully. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Reflection: What am I afraid will happen if I honestly express what I need?
