You have explained that it hurts. You have asked them not to mock you in public. Still, when it happens again, you are told that you take things too seriously. You begin to wonder whether asking for basic respect is asking too much.
It is painful when the person you want to feel closest to makes you feel small.
“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another.” — Romans 12:10 (KJV)
Honour should be visible in how we treat people. It includes our tone, our jokes, and what we say when we are annoyed. Affection does not cancel the damage of repeated contempt.
Basic respect belongs in everyday love
If you are single or dating, notice how someone treats you when you disagree. Gifts cannot compensate for humiliation. Do not assume a wedding will teach someone to honour boundaries they currently ridicule. Address the pattern and seek wise counsel before making deeper commitments.
If you are married, respect remains a daily responsibility. Ephesians 5:25 calls husbands to sacrificial love. Verse 33 calls a wife to reverence her husband. Neither instruction permits cruelty, intimidation, or treating the other as inferior.
You may need to say, “We can discuss this concern, but I will not continue while I am being insulted.” Where it is safe, pause and agree on a time to return. A pause should protect the conversation, rather than become days of punishment.
And examine your own speech. Have sarcasm and eye-rolling become your way of showing disappointment? Do you speak more kindly to strangers than to the person you love? Repentance includes the small moments you have learnt to excuse.
Today, choose one behaviour to stop and one way to show honour. An honest apology might sound like, “I embarrassed you in front of others. That was wrong. I will address disagreements privately.”
God can teach you to speak firmly without tearing someone down. Love becomes more trustworthy when dignity is protected in ordinary moments.
Prayer: Father, guard my words and restore dignity in our relationships. Give me courage to address disrespect and humility to change my own behaviour. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Reflection: How does the person closest to me experience my tone?
