Spread the love
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Graduate. Get a job. Meet someone. Marry by a certain age. You had a plan—and now one part of it is not happening on schedule.

It is hard to watch friends reach milestones you hoped to share. But a missed deadline you set for yourself is not proof that God has missed you.

Commit your way, not just your wishlist

Psalm 37 addresses the frustration of seeing wrongdoers prosper. David calls God’s people to trust the Lord, do good, delight in him and commit their way to him (verses 3–5).

This is more than waiting for a desired outcome. It is an invitation to live faithfully when you cannot make everything fit. Delight in God is a relationship, not a technique for obtaining a spouse.

“He will give you the desires of your heart” is not a blank cheque for every wish. Read it within a psalm that calls us to trust God’s goodness and justice rather than fret over other people’s circumstances.

Surrender is not inactivity

You can meet people, ask for wise introductions and take dating seriously. You can also recognise that another person’s choice and the timing of a relationship are not yours to command.

What is in your hands? Honesty. Boundaries. Listening to counsel. How you treat people. Whether you keep showing up for the life and responsibilities you have now.

What is not? Making someone love you, forcing a proposal or proving your worth through somebody else’s timeline.

Release the comparison

Someone else’s wedding is not evidence that you are behind in following Jesus. Celebrate them honestly, and admit your own sadness to God without shame.

Be careful with the thought that anxiety is delaying your blessing. Scripture does not teach that checking your phone nervously postpones a divinely appointed wedding. You can seek help with anxiety without feeling responsible for controlling God’s timetable.

Commit your way to him today. That may look like a prayer, a wise conversation and one ordinary task completed faithfully—not a sudden disappearance of every question.

Reflect

  • Which deadline have I treated as a measure of my worth?
  • What faithful choice is actually mine to make today?

Prayer

Father, help me trust you with my hopes and limits. Guide what I can choose, and help me release what I cannot control. Keep my heart rooted in Christ. Amen.

One step today

Make two short lists: “My responsibility” and “Not in my control.” Pray over both, then act on one item from the first.
