The dishes are still in the sink. Your spouse is finishing a work deadline. You notice—and then the familiar thought arrives: “Why should I do it? I’ve had a long day too.”
Sometimes love begins in that moment. Not with a grand speech, but with deciding that another person’s load matters.
Jesus sets the standard
Ephesians 5:25 tells husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her. Paul’s standard is not simply being pleasant or paying the bills. It is self-giving love shaped by Jesus.
That does not make a husband his wife’s saviour. Only Christ saves. It does challenge any version of marriage leadership that expects service while refusing to serve.
In John 13, Jesus washes his disciples’ feet and teaches them to serve one another. His example reaches into our daily choices: whether we notice a need, whether we help, and whether we treat an unglamorous task as beneath us.
Notice the invisible work
Some responsibilities are easy to see. Others happen quietly: remembering appointments, planning meals, keeping up with family needs or noticing when something at home is running out.
Ask your spouse, “What are you carrying that I haven’t noticed?” Then listen. Do not turn the answer into a contest over who works harder.
Husbands, take Paul’s instruction personally. Look for a responsibility you can own, not just “help with” when asked. The wider Christian call to love and serve also invites wives to show the same thoughtful care.
Serve with honesty
Service is not a strategy for earning praise or getting your own way later. But it also does not require pretending you have unlimited strength. Honest conversations about rest, fairness and needs are part of a healthy partnership.
If one person always carries everything while the other refuses responsibility, the solution is not to quote sacrifice at the exhausted spouse. Address the pattern, and seek wise support when needed.
You do not have to manufacture Christlike love through determination alone. Bring your pride, fatigue and resentment to Jesus. Ask for grace, then take one concrete step of obedience.
Reflect
- What need have I noticed but left for my spouse to handle?
- Do I serve willingly, or keep a private invoice?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for your self-giving love. Help me notice what my spouse carries, take responsibility and serve without pride. Give us wisdom to care for each other honestly. Amen.
One step today
Ask which task would genuinely ease your spouse’s week. Agree what you will take responsibility for, then follow through.
