Spread the love
Reading Time: 2 minutes

He forgot something important. Again. You are about to explain it to your friend, and the sentence forming in your head starts with, “Honestly, he’s useless at…”

You have a legitimate frustration. But how you speak about your husband can either address the problem or turn it into contempt.

Respect and love belong together

Ephesians 5:33 calls a husband to love his wife as himself and a wife to respect her husband. Read that instruction alongside the chapter’s call to Christlike love. It is not permission for one spouse to demand honour while treating the other badly.

Nor does it mean every man needs only respect and every woman needs only affection. Both are people who need love, dignity and honest care.

Respect means you do not have to attack his value as a person to challenge his behaviour. “We agreed you would handle that, and it didn’t happen” is clear. “You never do anything right” turns a specific problem into a personal verdict.

You still have a voice

You can disagree, ask questions and raise concerns about money, parenting, family boundaries or decisions that affect you both. A respectful marriage makes room for both people’s wisdom.

Choose a suitable time when possible. Say what happened, how it affected you and what needs to change. Invite a response, but do not confuse listening with abandoning your concern.

For example: “When you committed us to that expense without discussing it, I felt left out. Can we agree to talk before making purchases above this amount?”

Respect is not a cover for harm

You do not have to praise conduct that is wrong. Biblical respect does not require hiding threats, abuse or serious wrongdoing. Seeking trustworthy help is not the same as gossiping to embarrass someone.

Where there is ongoing hurt, a pastor or qualified counsellor may help you address it. Where you feel unsafe, prioritise safety and appropriate support rather than trying to manage the situation through a gentler tone.

For the ordinary friction of daily life, practise honest speech without humiliation. And notice genuine good as well. A sincere “Thank you for following through” can matter without cancelling a conversation you still need to have.

Reflect

  • Am I addressing a specific issue or attacking his character?
  • What honest concern needs a calm, direct conversation?

Prayer

Lord, help me speak with courage and kindness. Guard me from contempt, and help both of us receive correction and treat each other with dignity. In Jesus’ name, amen.

One step today

Rewrite one complaint as a clear statement of what happened, how it affected you and what you are asking for.
