You start with a purchase and end up arguing about respect. The amount on the receipt is small. The feelings are not.
Sometimes money disagreements are exactly about an unaffordable expense. Sometimes they also touch fear, trust, family experiences or feeling excluded from decisions.
Treasure touches the heart
In Matthew 6:19–24, Jesus contrasts earthly and heavenly treasure and warns against serving money. Verse 21 connects our treasure with our hearts.
His central concern is our allegiance to God, not a technique for resolving budget arguments. But the passage asks us to examine what money has come to represent.
Are you seeking security, status, freedom or control? Those questions matter alongside the actual numbers.
Get curious without ignoring the bill
Ask, “What worried you about that purchase?” or “What did my question feel like to you?” Your spouse may explain something you had not understood.
Perhaps unexpected spending feels frightening because income has been uncertain. Perhaps being questioned sounds like an accusation because of earlier experiences. Listening can help you respond to the concern rather than only the tone.
Understanding does not erase responsibility. If money was spent secretly or an agreement was broken, address that clearly. Emotional insight cannot replace honest accounts.
Make a shared agreement
Discuss what each person needs to know, which purchases require a conversation and when you will review the budget. Both spouses should have a meaningful voice.
A saver is not automatically faithful, and a spender is not automatically selfish. Careful planning and generosity both belong in Christian stewardship.
Bring the conversation back to shared responsibilities and values rather than trying to win. What are you caring for? What can you afford? How can you honour God together?
If conversations involve intimidation, restricted access to necessities or financial control, seek appropriate support. That is more than a disagreement about preferences.
Reflect
- What does money represent to me beyond its practical use?
- Which financial agreement needs to become clearer?
Prayer
Father, help us serve you rather than money. Give us honesty, generosity and patience as we discuss our responsibilities. In Jesus’ name, amen.
One step today
Have one calm conversation about what financial security means to each of you before discussing a disputed purchase.
