A relationship feels intense, so you call it certainty. The messages are constant. The future sounds exciting. Difficult questions can wait, you think.
Strong feelings are not a bad thing. They are also not a substitute for honesty about the person, the relationship and the family dynamics involved.
Read the story carefully
Genesis 29:20 says Jacob served seven years for Rachel. That is not a picture of a man rushing a proposal.
Laban then deceives him by substituting Leah at the wedding. Laban’s wrongdoing should not be excused or attributed to Jacob’s failure to wait longer.
Jacob also has a history of deception, and the household that follows includes painful favouritism and rivalry. The narrative records these things; it does not present the arrangement as an ideal to copy.
Attraction cannot settle every question
We should not claim that Jacob’s marriage story proves a specific modern engagement length. But it gives us reason to take integrity and family power seriously.
In your own relationship, discuss faith, conflict, money, commitments and expectations before making major promises. Observe character over time and welcome wise counsel.
If another person is deceiving or pressuring you, that is their responsibility. You can respond with boundaries without assuming you caused it by not being wise enough.
Do not make people compete for your care
Leah’s pain is part of the story, not a background detail. Romantic longing can become cruel when someone else is treated as an obstacle or a less valuable person.
Be honest if you are not ready to commit. Do not keep one person emotionally invested while privately pursuing another.
God works through this deeply flawed family in his larger purposes. That shows his grace; it does not approve deception or give us permission to create harm and expect him to sort it out.
Reflect
- Which important conversation have I delayed because feelings seem strong?
- Am I treating everyone involved with honesty and dignity?
Prayer
Lord, help me read your Word carefully and live honestly. Give me discernment, courage to face difficult truths and care for everyone affected by my choices. In Jesus’ name, amen.
