Spread the love
Reading Time: 2 minutes

You know your spouse’s lunch order and phone password. Do you know what has been worrying them this week?

It is possible to share a busy home and still feel lonely. Physical closeness matters, but it cannot do all the work of being heard, understood and cared for.

Protect the friendship within the covenant

Proverbs 2 warns against adultery. Verse 17 describes someone forsaking the companion of her youth and forgetting God’s covenant.

The passage is not a detailed psychology of how every affair begins. It does remind us that marital faithfulness involves loyalty to a person and a covenant, not simply avoiding one physical act.

Care for your friendship as part of that loyalty. But remember: emotional distance never excuses betrayal. Each spouse remains responsible for their own faithfulness.

Ask beyond the schedule

Try a question that invites a real answer: “What has been hardest lately?” “Is there something you wish I understood?” “What are you excited about?”

Then let the answer finish. Put down the phone. Resist replying with a correction, a competing story or an instant solution. You can ask, “Would you like me to listen, or help think it through?”

Share something yourself too. Intimacy is not one person conducting an interview while keeping their own inner life hidden.

Make honesty safe

If your spouse admits a fear, do not laugh at it or save it as ammunition for your next argument. If they raise a concern about you, listen before defending yourself.

Safety does not mean agreeing with everything. It means responding with dignity and taking the conversation seriously. Trust grows through repeated, reliable responses.

Your spouse need not be your only source of friendship or support. Healthy Christian community can strengthen a marriage. Seek help if you cannot discuss important things without escalation or withdrawal.

Emotional closeness usually grows through ordinary moments of attention. You do not need a dramatic disclosure tonight. Start by being genuinely present for the person beside you.

Reflect

  • What do I know about my spouse’s current hopes and fears?
  • How do I respond when they tell me something difficult?

Prayer

Father, teach us to listen and speak honestly. Help us protect our friendship and honour our covenant with faithful, thoughtful care. In Jesus’ name, amen.

One step today

Take ten phone-free minutes and ask each other one question that is not about household tasks.
