Hi dear, yesterday I told you how that God watches you. God keeps watch over us his children and his angels are constantly watching over you and I.
The fact that God watches over us also means that he sees all that we do, and that means everything we engage in whether good or bad, the things we do in secret, and the ones that are open to everyone.
Take for instance, your parents might not know if you disobey them, or when you make faces at them when they correct you, but God sees you, and that is because he doesn’t turn his face away from you for a second.
For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths, the evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly. –Proverbs 5:21-23 (NIV)
I want you to pay close attention to today’s devotional as I will be shedding more light on our focus verse.
Asides that God sees you when you do good things, and of course bad things, another reason you shouldn’t get yourself involved in bad things is that, they will get you in trouble.
There is never an escape route after choosing to do something wrong, the truth will always be exposed and you will get in trouble. It’s even worse when you are caught in the act or you are found out.
See what the bible says;
the evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast.
If you continue disobeying what you are told to do, your actions will get you in trouble.
The only way out, and the solution to not getting in trouble is following instructions, and if you follow instructions, it shows that you are disciplined.
Choose to be a disciplined child at all times, obey your parents, do what is right at the right time, and you will be glad you did.
PRAYER: Father in Jesus name, I receive grace to do the right thing all the time; Amen
ACTION PLAN: Choose to be deliberate about what you say
DECLARATION: I am a good child, I am wise, and obedient.
One of the things I want you to know is that God watches over us dutifully. Not only does God know our every step, there are angels that God has assigned to watch you every second, and their gaze doesn’t shift from us.
This is how you know that evil cannot come near you, because God watches over you all the time and there are angels at work for you as well little children.
Asides the fact that God keeps watch over our lives, what we do daily is also open to him; the time you wake up every day, when take your bath, God sees your breakfast time, when you get on a bus to go to school.
Let me make this more interesting. God sees you when you tell a lie. God sees you when you make faces at your teachers or tutors in school. God sees you when you gossip about someone to another person. He sees everything you do.
Let me show you what the bible says;
For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths, the evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly. – Proverbs 5:21-23 (NIV)
So you see, God doesn’t just see everything you do, he also examines them. Do you know what it means to examine something?
To examine means to inspect or study thoroughly to determine the nature or condition of something.
To God your actions are well examined, showing if it be good or otherwise. This is why you have to be mindful and intentional about what you do, and don’t do.
PRAYER: Father in Jesus name, I receive grace to do the right thing all the time; Amen
ACTION PLAN: Choose to be deliberate about what you say
DECLARATION: I am a good child. I am wise and obedient.
Do you know you can be specific in the place of prayers? Yes, you can. Let’s take a look at the story of Ade. Ade mentioned his prayers to his mum as they drove home from school.
‘God should help me in my coming school examinations,’ Ade said.
‘That’s an empty prayer request,’ she said. ‘Be specific about what grades you want in each subject’
Ade wondered why he should. God said His plans for us are good. God should know what grades to give him.
‘It is good to be specific in your prayer requests to God,’ she said further.
Mum is right. Imagine if the blind man in yesterday’s story (Luke 18:40-41) asked for blessings?
The question is, what exact blessing did he need right then? What was the most important thing he needed? To see. And how did Jesus reply? Jesus said, “Jesus said to him, Then see! You are healed because you believed.”
Being specific aids your expectations regarding your wants. You have a view of the expected results in your mind and expect nothing less.
So, stop saying vague prayers and tell God exactly what you want. The blind man got what he wanted.
At once the man was able to see,… – Luke 18:43 (ICB)
One of the greatest assets you have as a child is your heart and that equals your mind. So, you must learn how to guard your heart. Your heart is where your imaginations come from, that’s where all the creative things you think about come from. That’s even where your will to do good or bad is.
As God’s child, it is important that you pay very close attention to your heart. I have taught you here that staying away from people that make you disobey the word of God and your parents is very important if you want to continue being a good girl/ boy.
Today I want to show you more of what God says about keeping your heart from the book of Proverbs.
Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:23-27 (NIV)
The bible says you should guard your heart because it is the wellspring of life. Everything you do in life begins from your heart. This is why God is concerned about your heart, God wants you to be a good child, he wants your mom and dad to be proud of you, God wants your friends to be able to actually call you a good friend, God wants all these good things, and more for you.
I like this verse because it doesn’t just stop by telling us what to do, it goes further to tell us how we can actually guard our hearts.
1. It teaches us that one of the ways to guard our heart is by watching what we say, don’t tell a lie, and do not speak badly about another person, keep corrupt sayings/slang away from our mouths.
2. Also, this verse talks about our eyes, keeping our gaze on godly things, reading your bible daily, do not join your schoolmates or neighbours in watching things that are not godly.
3. The last thing mentioned here is, to watch where you go and the things you do. Be careful of the activities you get involved in, be sure to tell mom and Dad before going anywhere or trying something new.
That’s all for today!
PRAYER: Father in Jesus name, I receive the help of the Holy Spirit to guard my heart in Jesus name; Amen
ACTION POINT: Ask God for Wisdom
DECLARATION: I will not speak corrupt things, my mouth only declares good and godly things, and I walk in the right path all the time
Dear precious one, we are still on our wisdom series from the book of Proverbs, and we are looking at how God’s word gives healing today. King Solomon has a lot of wisdom to share with us and lots of secrets to unveil too.
Today we will be learning something new, different from what we have been learning before now.
Let’s look at our focus verse for today.
My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings. Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh. –Proverbs 4:20-22 (AMP)
One of the finished works of Jesus on the cross of Calvary is healing, God desires that we, his children live in good health all the days of our lives.
If you are familiar with the story of Jesus, you will see that he healed a lot of people in the short time that he lived on the earth.
Jesus went about healing the sick and even raised the dead. This shows that God is interested in your health, and that of your family, and friends.
See what the bible says here;
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. –3 John 2 (NIV)
Thanks to King Solomon who has shown us that one of the ways to have good health is to have God’s word in your heart. The bible says the word of God is life to them that find it and healing to their health.
Take out time every day to search God’s word, read your bible stories and learn what God’s word says concerning you and your family. Even if it’s a verse you are able to learn in a month, it’s a good start, as long as you keep at it.
Tell your parents to help monitor you and make sure you are committed, with time you’ll realize it’s fun to learn from the bible.
PRAYER: Father in Jesus name, I pray that I am committed to searching your word every day. Amen
ACTION PLAN: Pick a verse you like and memorize it.
DECLARATION: I am a wise child, I have the wisdom of God.
Dear Child, do you know that you too can shine? There is a passage of the Scripture that talks about you shining brighter and brighter.
But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. 4:19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. – Proverbs 4:18-19
Who is the Just?
1. Whoever has received Jesus Christ as Lord and saviour
2. A person that obey God’s word
3. A person that reads the Bible diligently
4. A person that prays all the time
5. Obedience to your parents is one of the proof of being just.
It’s a choice to be called just or wicked, the Bible clearly States the difference by showing us what happens to the just and the reward of the wicked.
The Bible equates being just with having light and being wicked with Darkness.
God indeed desires that you help your friends. One of the values you have to learn early in life is being compassionate and lending a helping hand to whoever needs help. It’s one of the ways of showing love to those around us.
This is God’s desire for us as his children, to be always willing to help out where ever there is a need.
Let’s see what the bible says!
Never walk away from someone who deserves help; your hand is God’s hand for that person. Don’t tell your neighbor, “Maybe some other time, “or, “Try me tomorrow,” when the money’s right there in your pocket. Don’t figure ways of taking advantage of your neighbor when he’s sitting there trusting and unsuspecting. – Proverbs 3:27-29 (MSG)
God’s word teaches us not to walk away from someone who needs help. Why is that? God needs our help to help people around us, not that you go around talking to strangers; your parents have to be aware of whoever you are helping.
We are God’s vessels on earth and so he uses you and me to answer the prayers of others when we render a helping hand to those around us.
The bible also says, when your neighbor comes to you for help, don’t tell the person to come back, don’t turn him or her down when you can actually help at that moment.
Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow “when you now have it with you.
As a child of God, don’t go looking for ways to hurt or harm others. That’s not the attitude of a child of God.
Jesus wants you to love everyone just like he loves you. How do you do this?
By obeying God’s word, and following what the bible says.
PRAYER: Precious Holy Spirit, please teach me how to always help others when I can. Amen
ACTION PLAN: Help someone today
DECLARATION: I am a child of God, I am available to be used by God.
It is good to get people in your life. This is because no one is an island. In this life, you can’t do it alone, so learn how to have good associations.
What areas can you involve people?
We will look at goal-setting this morning.
You can tell others about your goals. Doing so is not to make you look holy or think less of those who don’t have goals like you.
When people know your goals, they could offer encouragement and support.
You want to start studying the bible and you tell your parents, they could offer to remind you daily to study, as well as ask you questions about what you have read – start up a discussion where you will learn more from them or offer you materials that could help you study well.
Goal setting is best achieved when you have the help, support, and encouragement of others. Why? When your goals seem unachievable, you aren’t too sure about them anymore and feel like giving up totally on them, you will need people to help you.
The Ethiopian eunuch was reading from the book of Isaiah and didn’t understand what it was about. It took the Holy Spirit sending Phillip to him before he could understand, after which he gave his life to Christ.
What do you think the eunuch would have done if Phillip hadn’t come? He probably would have just given up.
Phillip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?’ He answered, “How can I understand? I need someone to explain it to me!” Then he invited Phillip to climb in and sit with him (Acts 30-31).
Do not go on a solo ride in goal setting. Involve God and others.
God bless you.
Prayer: Lord, help me to understand that I don’t have to do this alone. Help me involve others. Lead me to the right people and help me accept their advice and support. Amen.
Action point: Are there people who can support, encourage, and help you with your goals? If not, prayerfully ask God to show them to you.
Declaration:
I am surrounded by the right set of people. God helps me to set and achieve my goals.
Hello Champ, we are still on our wisdom series from the book of Proverbs, and there are quite a number of benefits of being wise. If you will agree with me, King Solomon was a very wise man; there is lots of wisdom embedded in his book.
Our focus verse for today is from Proverbs 3: 13-18, let’s see what the bible says!
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed. –Proverbs 3:13-18 (NIV)
Wisdom is one of the best things you can get in life; a person who has wisdom will always be at the top.
Today I want to identify for you the benefits of having wisdom.
1. A person with wisdom is blessed; an example of a blessed man in the bible is Father Abraham.
2. Wisdom is more profitable than silver and gold, these are one of the most valuable things on earth, and the bible still says wisdom is more profitable.
3. You will have long life when you are wise.
4. Wisdom will bring riches to you.
5. Wisdom will make you honourable.
6. You’ll have peace if you have wisdom.
Now you see why you need to be wise. Continue learning from God’s word and keep listening to your parent.
PRAYER: Father in Jesus name, I receive the help of the Holy Spirit to be wise. Amen
ACTION PLAN: Read your Bible today
DECLARATION: I am wise, I am obedient, and I am a good child.
There’s a way to be expectant as children. Do we all remember the story of the blind man in the Bible?
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me. – Mark 10:47-48
What if the blind man had not asked what the surrounding ruckus was about? What if he had just continued begging and minded his business?
Something in him must have stirred him up to ask what was happening. He probably had been nursing a desire to have his sight, and when he heard that Jesus was around, it aroused his expectation.
Quickly, he opened his mouth and screamed the most he had ever done in his life. He knew it was now or never.
He had to have heard of the acts of Jesus to have done what he did. Even when they tried to shut him up, he screamed the more. This was the day he had been waiting for, and nothing or no one would stop him from getting what he wanted.
This was the same Jesus that had been healing people, and someone wanted him to shut up. He gave it his all and never regretted doing so.
Are you expecting to have what you are praying for? Are you listening to the voices telling you your prayers won’t be answered? Allowing people or circumstances to shut you up?
Be like that man and scream the more. Jesus is ready to command you be brought before him. And when you get in front of Jesus, know what you want.
You will never regret calling on Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, give me an expectant heart. Teach me to expect answers to my prayers. Amen.
Action point: Visualize your prayers as answered. See yourself in the light of prayers answered.
Declaration: I am expectant. My miracle will not pass me by.
Dear child, today I write to you on behalf of your mom and Dad. Mom and dad loves you. They want you to always know that they care about you, and they love you from the depth of their hearts.
One of the proofs of their love for you is that they have chosen to expose you the God’s word and the love of Christ at a very tender age, taking you through these devotionals every day is evidence of this fact.
I know you sometimes feel they don’t love you, especially when you are scolded for doing something wrong.
I am about to shock you!
The fact that they scolded and correct you is proof of how much they love you!
I know you won’t believe me, so I will be showing you what the bible says about correction and scolding, you will agree with me that the bible is the ultimate truth. Let’s see what our focus verse for today says.
My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. –Proverbs 3:11-12 (KJV)
Let me make this verse a lot simpler for you.
The bible is saying first of all that God corrects us as his children when his corrects come, we should pay close attention and take it as a warning, and that God corrects those he loves, as parents correct a child they are proud of.
So you see God corrects us, and so do our parents. The role of mummy and daddy is to let us know when we do something wrong and help us do better, even if we get flogged for it.
It’s a child that is loved that gets corrected, today embrace every scolding and correction that comes from your parent, and always strive to do better to make them proud of you.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to accept corrections at all times. Amen
ACTION PLAN: Tell your parents how much you love them
DECLARATION:
I love my mum and Dad, I cherish their sacrifices.
Do you know how to honour God with your substance? It’s never too early to learn some things in life. Why do I say this? Every lesson we have learned from the book of Proverbs was written by King Solomon to his son!
He wrote to us little children, so that when we become adults, it will be easy for us to do things as God’s children.
Let’s see today’s focus verse!
Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. —Proverbs 3:9-10(KJV)
All of God’s instructions to us, is accompanied with a reward if we are obedient.
The Bible is teaching us as little children to Honour God, not just with our words, and in our hearts, but also with our substance and the first fruit of our increase! What does it mean to honour God with our substance?
Our substance is whatever we have. In this age the equivalent of our substance is money.
As children of God, we should learn to honour God with every token given to us by our parents.
It’s not too early to set aside your offerings from what Mummy and Daddy gives you.
When you get a token during the holidays from grandparents, uncles and aunties, learn to set aside what you will use to honour God.
The bible also says you should honour God with the first fruit of your increase.
It’s not too early for you to learn how to give a tenth to God. That’s another way of honouring God!
What does the Bible promise if we do this?
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. —Proverbs 3:10(KJV)
There will be blessings everywhere, for you and your parents, because they gave you what you are using to honour God.
Remember Abraham, he wasn’t the only blessed one, the people around him were blessed too because of him. That can be you, and everyone around you can be blessed because of you.
Prayer: Teach me to honour you at all times oh Lord. Amen
Action point: Set aside part of what you earn to honour God. Ask your parents to help you.
Let’s examine Tola’s story as we seek to understand the concept of the Holy Spirit and you. After successfully stealing some money from her mother’s purse, Tola felt good knowing that she had money to spend with her friends at school.
Her friends always had lots of money to spend at school and she didn’t want to be any different.
But she kept having a feeling. As much as she was happy, the feelings of happiness were slowly dwindling.
What could it be, she wondered. Soon, she began to feel bad about taking the money.
A voice kept telling her it was wrong of her to have taken the money. It kept telling her she had stolen the money.
But I didn’t steal the money, Tola said to herself. It’s my mother’s money and she has lots of it.
Tola was hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit.
When you sin, the Holy Spirit convicts you of it. He speaks to your heart and tells you what you did wrong.
When the Holy Spirit speaks to you and can convict you to the point where you change your ways or confess your wrongdoings, you are still in a safe zone. You still have a conscience.
Tola didn’t spend the money at school that day or went with her friends to buy things. She felt bad about taking the money and knew what she had to do – tell her mother the truth, ask for her forgiveness, and never steal again in her life.
May the Holy Spirit give you a healthy conscience. Amen.
Prayer: Sweet Spirit of God, thank you for the power to convict me of all sins. Please give me a heart that will listen and obey you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Action point: Has the Holy Spirit ever spoken to you about something wrong you did? How did you respond? Did you do what He said or not? Decide to always listen to and obey His instructions.
Declaration: My conscience is not seared. I listen and obey the Holy Spirit.
There’s is a way to trust God. Dear child, I hope you have learned a thing or two from our lessons from King Solomon, as we continue in our study of the book of proverbs, I will be showing you more wisdom written by King Solomon, make sure you adhere to it.
By so doing, you will make your parents proud, and also make God happy.
Let’s go straight to today’s lesson!
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. – Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)
The word Trust means to have confidence in the honesty or integrity of a person or thing. One of the common examples of trust is the belief that someone is being truthful.
Dear Child, God can be trusted! You need to know this for the rest of your life. You can count on God for everything and anything.
God is honest and true to his words, he has never said a thing that he doesn’t mean. God doesn’t lie!
Just like King Solomon says trust in the Lord, not just that but with all your heart!
How do you show that you trust God?
1. By valuing your relationship with God, you do this by letting the world know that you are God’s child and you are not ashamed to know as one.
2. By being honest with God, do not try to hide how you feel, speaking to God freely shows that you trust him.
3. By communicating with God frequently in prayers.
4. By always asking God for help.
5. By admitting to God when you do the wrong thing and ask for forgiveness.
This is how to trust God. God also wants you to trust him, if he didn’t you won’t find this verse in the bible, learn how to trust God always, and you will see him show up for you at all times.
PRAYER: Father in Jesus name, teach me how to trust you with my heart. Amen
ACTION PLAN: Practice one of the ways taught in the devotional
DECLARATION: I will trust the Lord with all my heart
Hi Champ, let’s dive right into today’s devotional, shall we? Today is about love and loyalty.
Today I will be talking to you about two great attributes the Famous King Solomon recommends in the book of proverbs. These attributes can be found in our focus verses for today.
Let’s see what the bible says.
Don’t lose your grip on Love and Loyalty. Tie them around your neck; carve their initials on your heart. Earn a reputation for living well in God’s eyes and the eyes of the people. –Proverbs 3:3-4 (MSG)
This verse identifies two things you shouldn’t lose grip on, two things you shouldn’t let go of, and two things you should hold on to for the rest of your lives. These things are Love and Loyalty.
What is Love?
This is when you truly and really care about someone or something, so much that you try very hard to take care of them and keep them safe.
Remember what the bible says about Love? It’s the greatest commandment of all, God’s instruction to us is to love our neighbour –those around us– as ourselves.
Let’s see what loyalty means…
Loyalty means being committed to our family and friends, and being committed means that we make promises and keep them. We do what we say we’ll do for the people we care about.
King Solomon says you should not lose grip of Love and Loyalty, he says they should be a priority to you so much that you carry them around always like you wear something around your neck, he says you write them in your hearts like you would write something on a piece of wood.
This will help you live a reputable life, a life lived for God. And by so doing, your good reputation will also be visible to everyone around you.
PRAYER: Father in Jesus name, teach me how to love others and be loyal at all times. Amen
ACTION PLAN: Do something really nice for someone today.
DECLARATION: I have love in my heart, I am loyal to my friends and family.
Dear child, there is the key to long life and prosperity. Now one of the much-repeated words in the book of proverbs is a reminder to keep the words you have learned in a place that no one else can find except you, and that you never forget what you have learned.
This is why you have to protect your heart because that’s where King Solomon has instructed that you put the wisdom you have heard.
You have to protect your heart from bad friends and associations. It’s very important that you are mindful of what you see, what you hear, and what you think.
Remember the parable of the sower in the New Testament? After the sower had sown, some of the seeds were attacked. That’s what King Solomon is warning us about.
Let’s see our focus verse for today.
My Son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. –Proverbs 3:1-2 (NIV)
Yet again the wise king is asking us not to forget what we are learning, we will always need in our daily lives, and we will always need to apply it in every, and any decision we make. If we forget how do we then know what is right and who not to associate with?
Also, he tells us where to keep the things we are learning, he says in our hearts. Do you know why he mentions the heart?
The heart is most time where you make decisions, the instructions have to be in your heart for you to always reach out to it when you need to make a decision about something.
King Solomon says if you do thisthey will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
Long life and good health are a result of following wise instructions, what you learn in God’s word and what your parents teach you.
It will also bring you prosperity just like the Bible says. Prosperity means to be blessed, and successful at all times.
Do you want long life? Do you want to prosper? The key to this is, don’t forget the wisdom you learn!
PRAYER: Dear Holy Spirit, please help me not to forget what I am learning. Amen
ACTION PLAN: Decide to read your bible today.
DECLARATION: I have long life, I am prosperous, and I am a good child.
Hello, young “wisdom Scholar” it’s been an exciting time of learning from the King, Solomon. Without doubts, it’s been wisdom all the way.
Let’s pick up from where we spotted yesterday, shall we?
…understanding shall keep thee: To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths: -Proverbs 2:11b -15 (KJV)
The bible says once you have wisdom, understanding will keep you.
Understanding implies being able to process wisdom in a way that becomes simple to you.
It’s important that you not only know wisdom but also understand what you have learnt, so you can apply it to your everyday life.
What will this do for you?
1. It will keep you from evil people, just like the bible says. It will keep you from ungodly friends and people that will make you do evil things.
2. It will also deliver you from a person that lies and speaks evil of other people; like gossip.
3. Wisdom keeps you on the path of uprightness, where you do what is right at all times.
4. It will prevent you from walking in darkness; that means you will walk in the light of God’s word always.
5. Wisdom will help you recognize the kind of friends you shouldn’t associate with.
This is enough reason to search for wisdom as God’s children, and how can we get this wisdom? It’s by reading and meditating on the word of God –the Bible– all the time.
Make a commitment today as children, to always read your bibles and listen to your parents. Obey God’s word, and what your Mom and Dad tell you all the time, this is what proves that you have learned wisdom and have understood it.
PRAYER: Father in Jesus name, help me to obey your word and my parents always. Amen
ACTION PLAN: Choose to always obey every instruction given to you by your parents
DECLARATION: I am wise, I understand wisdom, and I know the right thing to do at all times.
Hi Champ, it’s another exciting time to dig into God’s word. Let’s look at the benefits of having wisdom. There is a lot to learn from the wise king, Solomon.
It’s always exciting to read the book of Proverbs. Let’s learn something new today!
When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths: Proverbs 2:10-15 (KJV)
In our verses today, King Solomon identified for us one of the reasons we should be wise and have wisdom.
First of all, he identifies for us where wisdom should be located in our lives. The wise King says wisdom should be in our hearts.
This means that, beyond knowing what God’s words say, we should also put it in our hearts and live by God’s principles
He also tells us that knowledge should be pleasant to us. You know how you feel when mummy comes home with a bowl of ice cream? That’s how you should feel about knowledge!
What happens when we have wisdom in our hearts and knowledge is pleasant to us?
The Bible says;
1. Discretion will preserve you.
Do you know what Discretion is? It is the ability to always think things through and act in the right way.
Everyone needs discretion in their lives, especially children of God like you and I.
This is because we should always seek to please God. If that’s our aim, then we have to carefully think through what we do, this is because our decisions matter at all time, and how we decide to do what we do matters as well.
Today we will be looking at showing gratitude to your parents. Parents can be wonderful. They can be overbearing as well. They can reel out commands, rules, and guidelines. They tell you what to do and what not to do. They tell you when and when not to watch the TV.
To you, it seems as though they were over children. They just grew into adulthood one day.
Well, I have good news for you. Your parents love you. They love you so much they want the best for you. The rules and laws they give you are to bring out the best in you, not necessarily to restrict you.
They want to see you excel in your studies and in life. They want you to become a successful parent someday.
So the next time they tell you to wash your clothes, for example, know that it’s for your own good. They don’t want you to be a dirty person. When your clothes reek of sweat and are dirty, people will not want to associate with you and you could get teased or mocked at school by your mates. This could affect your self-esteem, making you withdraw from others.
Even the Bible encourages us to keep clean as it portrays the state of our hearts before God.
Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. Wash and make yourselves clean. Isaiah 1:16 NIV.
Again the Bible tells you to obey and honor your parents so that it might be well with you.
Ephesians 6:2-3 GW “Honor your father and mother, that everything may go well for you, and you may have a long life on earth.” This is an important commandment with a promise.
