Spread the love
Reading Time: 2 minutes

You thought you would be further along by now.

Perhaps you expected to be married, but you are still navigating introductions that go nowhere. Perhaps you are married, but you imagined that by now there would be more financial stability, deeper connection, or a child in your arms.

Then someone asks, “So, what’s next?” You smile, but inside, you are tired of explaining a life that has not followed your plan.

How do you remain faithful when your expectations and your reality are far apart?

Bring God your disappointment

Psalm 13 begins with David asking, “How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever?” (Psalm 13:1, KJV).

That is an honest prayer. David feels forgotten, and he brings that feeling to God rather than hiding it.

You can do the same. Tell God what you hoped for and what hurts. You can trust him and still have questions. Faith gives you somewhere to bring your disappointment.

Hold your plans with open hands

Proverbs 16:9 says, “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps” (KJV).

Planning is wise. You can date intentionally, discuss goals with your spouse, save money, seek counsel, and take practical steps towards the future.

But a plan cannot guarantee an outcome. Neither can reaching a milestone guarantee the peace you hoped it would bring.

When circumstances change, ask God for wisdom about your next step. Sometimes faithfulness means continuing patiently. Sometimes it means adjusting a plan you once felt certain about.

Don’t let comparison make your decisions

Someone else’s wedding announcement does not mean you should ignore warning signs in a relationship.

Another couple’s new home does not mean you should take on debt you cannot manage.

Celebrate what is good in their lives while paying attention to the responsibilities and opportunities in yours. You rarely know the full story behind someone else’s photograph.

If you are married, let disappointment lead to conversation rather than blame. Try saying, “This season has been harder than I expected. How can we support each other?”

If you are single, keep investing in friendship, church, work, service, and personal growth. Your present life deserves care.

Take the next faithful step

Jesus tells his followers not to be consumed by tomorrow’s worries, but to seek God’s kingdom today (Matthew 6:33–34).

That does not promise your preferred timeline will eventually happen. It directs your attention towards the God you can follow now.

You may not know when circumstances will change. You can still make a wise choice, receive support, love someone well, and care for what God has entrusted to you today.

Reflect

  • Which unmet expectation has been weighing on me?
  • What is one faithful step I can take without knowing the whole outcome?

Prayer

Father, you know the future I imagined and the disappointment I carry. Help me trust you without pretending this is easy. Keep comparison from driving my choices. Give me wisdom, patience, and courage to follow you today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

One step today

Write down one expectation you are struggling with. Pray honestly about it, then choose one practical action that will help you live faithfully in your present circumstances.
