Spread the love
Reading Time: 2 minutes

It is late. You are lonely. Your ex’s name is still in your contacts, and the reasons you ended the relationship suddenly seem less serious.

“At least I wouldn’t be alone,” you think. Before sending the message, pause. A strong desire can make a damaging choice look like a sensible solution.

A painful shortcut

In Genesis 16, Sarai—later called Sarah—gives her servant Hagar to Abram in an attempt to obtain a child through her. Abram participates. The decision brings conflict, and Hagar suffers mistreatment.

Do not reduce Hagar to a warning illustration. She is a person harmed by the choices of people with power over her. The chapter also shows God seeing her distress.

Sarah’s longing for a child was real. But longing did not justify treating someone else as a means to an end. Abram’s responsibility matters too; this is not a story in which all blame belongs to a woman.

Wanting something good does not justify every method

For someone hoping to marry, the application is not “Never take initiative.” Meeting people or asking for an introduction is not comparable to exploiting Hagar.

The question is whether your next step requires dishonesty, manipulation, disregard for someone’s boundaries or compromise of clear biblical convictions.

Are you pursuing this person because you know their character, or because their attention quiets your loneliness? Are you asking them to commit freely, or trying to make them feel guilty for not choosing you?

Let other people remain people

Your future is not the only thing at stake in a relationship decision. The other person has a heart, responsibilities and the right to make honest choices. Faithful love does not turn them into an answer you must secure.

If you are tempted to return to an unhealthy pattern, speak to someone trustworthy before acting. You can acknowledge loneliness without letting it make the decision.

Genesis does not promise you a spouse in the way God promised Abraham descendants. But it does invite careful attention to trust, responsibility and the harm our shortcuts can cause.

Reflect

  • What am I tempted to excuse because I feel tired of waiting?
  • Who else would bear the cost of my next choice?

Prayer

Lord, you see my longing. Give me patience and honesty. Keep me from using people or compromising your Word to get what I want. Help me choose wisely through Jesus. Amen.
