Spread the love
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Another engagement announcement appears on your phone. You’re genuinely happy for your friend—but you still feel that quiet ache: “God, what about me?”

You can bring that feeling into prayer without apologising for it. If marriage is something you desire, pray about it honestly. But remember: your life matters now, not only when someone chooses you.

Hope without a deadline

Read Jeremiah 29:4–11. God’s message was addressed to his people living in exile in Babylon. He told them to build homes, plant gardens and seek the welfare of their city while they waited. His promise of hope was not permission to stop living.

Jeremiah 29:11 is not a personal guarantee that every Christian will marry. It does show God’s faithfulness to his people. We can trust his character without turning our preferred future into a promise he has not made.

That matters when relatives keep asking about your wedding or every church event seems to celebrate couples. You are not a less complete Christian because you are single. Your relationship with Christ is not a waiting room.

Pray for character, not just chemistry

If you hope to marry, you might pray: “Lord, if marriage is part of my future, help me and the person I may marry grow in honesty, kindness and faithfulness.” You do not need their name to bring that hope to God.

Pray for yourself too. Ask God to help you recognise unhealthy patterns, practise good boundaries and become a person who loves well. Prayer is not a way to control somebody’s choices or secure a particular person.

You can still meet people, accept sensible introductions and date with discernment. Trusting God does not require ignoring red flags because someone seems spiritual. Look for consistent character, not impressive religious language.

Keep living today

Invest in friendship, work, learning, church and service. Enjoy the life God has given you while holding your hopes with open hands. Wanting marriage and finding meaning in your present life can sit together.

Your worth does not rise when somebody sends a message or fall when they stop replying. You are invited to follow Jesus today—with your hopes, your questions and your ordinary Tuesday.

Reflect

  • Have I treated marriage as the point where my real life begins?
  • What character qualities am I praying for—and practising myself?

Prayer

Father, you know my desire for marriage. Help me trust you without demanding a deadline. Shape my character, guide my decisions and teach me to live fully in Christ today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

One step today

Write a short prayer about your hopes, then choose one meaningful thing to do this week that does not depend on your relationship status.
