“Small payments. Easy approval.” The offer makes a purchase feel affordable before you have considered what the commitment will mean next month.

Debt can affect more than a balance. It can bring stress into conversations, narrow choices and tempt someone to hide what they owe.

Wisdom notices the obligation

Proverbs 22:7 observes that the borrower is servant to the lender. It describes a power imbalance and invites us to take borrowing seriously.

It does not declare every loan sinful, or make debt a measure of someone’s spiritual worth. Emergencies and difficult circumstances can leave faithful people with obligations they did not welcome.

The practical invitation is to resist casual commitments and secrecy. Do not confuse being offered credit with being able to carry its cost responsibly.

Bring the facts into the light

If a commitment affects your household, discuss it honestly with your spouse. Understand the total obligation and the terms before agreeing.

When debt already exists, avoid turning the conversation into a character trial. Name what is owed, what you understand and what needs clarification. Both honesty and responsibility matter.

Shame often encourages silence. But hiding a statement rarely makes the obligation smaller; it makes shared planning harder.

Ask for the right help

This devotional is not a repayment plan or advice on a particular loan. Financial circumstances and local rules differ. If you are unsure what to do, consult a qualified adviser or reputable debt-support service.

Pause new non-essential commitments while you understand the situation. Resist offers that rely on urgency or promises you do not fully understand.

Do not measure your marriage by what another couple appears to own. A simpler choice can be responsible stewardship, not failure.

Following Christ includes truthfulness when the numbers are uncomfortable. Start there, together where safe, rather than pretending the problem does not exist.

Reflect

  • Have I agreed to an obligation without understanding it?
  • What financial fact have I avoided discussing?

Prayer

Father, give us honesty and wisdom. Free us from comparison and secrecy, and guide us toward trustworthy help and responsible decisions. In Jesus’ name, amen.

One step today

Gather the information about one existing obligation and arrange a calm conversation about what you need to understand next.
