A request for help arrives. One of you wants to respond immediately. The other wants to check what you can afford. Within minutes, kindness has become an argument.
Before labelling each other reckless or faithless, pause. You may be bringing different concerns to the same opportunity.
Willing giving matters
In 2 Corinthians 8–9, Paul discusses a collection for believers in need. Chapter 9:7 calls for giving that is decided willingly, not reluctantly or under compulsion.
God’s concern includes the heart of the giver. A gift obtained by shaming your spouse is not the same as a shared, willing response.
These chapters do not teach that giving a particular amount purchases a financial breakthrough. Christian generosity is a response to grace, not a transaction to make God owe us.
Discuss the need and the responsibilities
Understand what is being requested and through whom. For decisions involving shared resources, let both spouses speak honestly.
Caution is not always unbelief. Enthusiasm is not always wisdom. You can value both generous hearts and careful planning.
Ask what you can give responsibly, and consider other ways to help when money is limited: time, practical support or a useful connection. Do not promise what you cannot honour simply to avoid embarrassment.
Build a rhythm before the urgent request
Talk about generosity during a calm week. Which needs concern you both? How will you make decisions? What responsibilities must your plan also respect?
You do not need identical instincts to reach a thoughtful agreement. Listening can help generosity become a shared practice rather than a recurring contest.
Give without using the recipient’s hardship for public praise. People receiving help deserve dignity, not exposure.
As you follow Christ, let care for others grow alongside honest stewardship at home. Both can reflect love.
Reflect
- Have I used spiritual language to pressure my spouse?
- How could we make generosity a thoughtful shared practice?
Prayer
Father, make us willing and wise givers. Free us from pride, fear and pressure. Help us care for others while handling our shared responsibilities honestly. In Jesus’ name, amen.
One step today
Discuss one need you both care about and agree on a realistic way to respond.
