You are in the same room, but it feels as though you have barely met all week. You exchange updates. You finish tasks. Then you scroll until you sleep.
Perhaps you miss each other but neither knows how to say it without sounding like an accusation.
Love poetry includes longing
Song of Solomon 3:1–4 portrays the woman searching for the one she loves. It is a poetic scene of longing and finding, not a step-by-step counselling plan for a struggling marriage.
Still, the scene gives room for something couples recognise: caring deeply about someone and feeling the ache of distance.
You do not need to conclude that your marriage is beyond hope because connection feels difficult. You do need to take the concern seriously.
Name the distance gently
Try: “I’ve felt far from you lately, and I miss us. How has this season felt for you?” That invites a conversation rather than declaring whose fault everything is.
Listen for the actual issue. Is it exhaustion, grief, a repeated argument, feeling unappreciated or a broken promise? Do not assume physical closeness alone will repair what needs an apology.
Take responsibility for your own part without accepting blame for everything. “I’ve been distracted after work” is useful. “This is all my fault” may shut down a more honest discussion.
Choose a realistic next step
You might plan a short walk, share a meal without phones or return to an unresolved conversation at an agreed time. Small, consistent attention often matters more than a dramatic romantic gesture.
If the same conversation repeatedly ends in contempt, withdrawal or shouting, seek trustworthy help. Counselling is not reserved for the moment everything collapses.
Where there is intimidation or abuse, do not read “pursue connection” as a command to put yourself at risk. Safety and appropriate support come first.
You cannot rebuild a relationship by yourself. But where both people are willing, an honest invitation can begin a healthier pattern of listening, repair and care.
Reflect
- What kind of closeness do I miss most?
- What needs attention before another date night?
Prayer
Lord, help us speak honestly and hear each other with patience. Show us where repair is needed and guide us toward wise support. In Jesus’ name, amen.
One step today
Choose a calm moment to say, “I miss feeling connected to you. Could we talk about it?”
