Your latest messages could belong to a project team: “Did you pay it?” “What time are you home?” “Please buy bread.” Useful, yes. Romantic, not exactly.
A shared life needs logistics. But a marriage needs more than successful coordination. You are still two people who can enjoy each other, not just manage the week together.
Scripture makes room for delight
Song of Solomon is love poetry. In 7:10, the woman expresses belonging and delight in her beloved’s desire. The book gives language to affection, admiration and longing; it does not treat romantic love as something embarrassing.
Applied to marriage, that is an invitation to cherish your spouse. It is not a demand for constant excitement or a guarantee that every season will feel the same.
New jobs, small children, health changes and financial pressure can affect your energy. A quieter season does not automatically mean the relationship has failed.
Notice the person behind the role
Ask something that is not about the household: “What have you been looking forward to?” “What has felt heavy lately?” “What would you enjoy doing together?”
You may discover that your spouse has changed in ways you have not had time to notice. Stay curious rather than assuming you already know every answer.
Express genuine appreciation too. A thoughtful message during the day can say, “I still see you,” without needing to sound like a film script.
Keep it realistic
Romance does not require money you do not have. Make tea, take a walk or share a favourite meal at home. Agree on a little uninterrupted time rather than waiting for a perfect weekend.
If resentment or unresolved hurt is underneath the routine, name it kindly. A date cannot substitute for an apology or a conversation about a persistent problem.
And resist comparison. Somebody’s anniversary video is not a full account of their marriage. Tend your own relationship, in your own season, with patient attention.
The aim is not to recreate your first date exactly. It is to keep choosing the person beside you, with the deeper knowledge you have gained.
Reflect
- What do we enjoy together that we have stopped making time for?
- Is there a hurt we need to address before planning another date?
