Senator Ali Ndume was on Tuesday defeated by Senator Ahmed Lawan to emerge as the President of the 9th Senate.
During the election that was conducted during the inauguration of the 9th Senate at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, 79 votes were polled by Ahmed to defeat Ndume, who got 28 votes.
Declaring the result, Mohammed Sani-Omolor, who is the clerk of the National Assembly, announced the total vote cast to be 107. There was no void vote.
After the result, Sani-Omolori said, “Senator Elect Ahmed Lawan having scored more votes of the total votes, is hereby returned as President of the Senate.”
Lawan was afterwards administered oath of allegiance by Sani-Omolori.
Lawan who was the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) preferred candidate for the position, Ndume, also of the APC, insisted on contesting for the position.
